Abstract

An automatic winding machine having means for the automatic replacement of a wound package with an empty spool and having a conveyer belt to remove from the machine or winding station the doffed package, is provided with sensing means which prevents the transfer of a package from the winding station to said belt as long as there is inadequate belt space in the vicinity of said station. Doffing of a wound package 21 Fig. 1 (not shown) is effected automatically when the package reaches a predetermined size being pushed by a lever 320 through the position 211 to a conveyer belt 307. The presence on the conveyer of a package 2111 is detected by a pivotally mounted sensing lever 502 to which is attached a blocking member 501 the arrangement being such that the member 501 is in a raised position if the conveyer is loaded and in a lowered position if empty over a predetermined length. In a modification (Fig. 3 now shown) photoelectric sensing means are used to determine the presence on the conveyer of a wound package. In a further modification (Fig. 4 not shown) the sensing member operates to prevent doffing of the wound package until the conveyer is clear of wound packages. The winding machine is stated to be generally similar to that illustrated in Fig. 13 of Specification 971,372 and no detailed description is given of those parts that function in the same manner as in the earlier Specification.
