Abstract

1044004 Compandors ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 June 1963 [7 June 1962] 17199/66 Divided out of 1044003 Heading H3U U10B2 U2A1 U6 A smoothing circuit, used for smoothing the control signal for the volume compression and expansion system of Specification 1044003, comprises a pulse elongator, Fig.3, and a non- linear filter, Fig.4. The pulse elongator is fed with the rectified signal and has a characteristic such that rapid increases in level on the input result, immediately, in rapid increases in the voltage level on capacitor C1 via the diode 17, while the decay of the signal on removal of the input signal occurs with a defined time constant which is a function of the resistors Rl and R2 and the capacitor Cl. The non-linear filter, Fig.4, comprises a maximum selector circuit including diodes D3 and D4 which selects the larger of two signals, one of which is derived via a resistive potentiometer Rl, R2, with a capacitive shunt C0 providing overshoot on the leading edge of transients, and the other comprising an integrator circuit R4, Cl with diodes D1 and D2 providing a by-pass on the resistive component for signals in excess of 14 v. positive or negative.
