Abstract
A self-lubricating bearing is composed of polypropylene or low-pressure polyethylene, which is impregnated with a lubricant. The plastics material of the bearing is porous, the pore-volume being between 4-40%. The bearing is produced by admixing a blowing-agent to a plasticized polyolefin, moulding the mixture at gas-generating temperature, cooling the resulting product and impregnating the product with a lubricant. Suitable blowing agents include azo dicarbonamide, trihydrazine triazine, and N,N1-dinitroso pentamethylene tetramine. An activating agent may be included in the mixture, e.g. urea, biuret, ethanolamine, borax, glycols and zinc lead and cadmium compounds. The bearing structure may be impregnated by immersion in liquid lubricant such as oil or in petroleum jelly and these may be heated.
