Abstract

Friedel-Crafts catalysts are removed from polymerized oils, obtained by polymerizing a steam-cracked petroleum hydrocarbon fraction boiling in the range 130-280 DEG C. in the presence of the above catalyst, by treating the polymerized oil with dry ammonia or organic amines. The monomer may be a steam-cracked naphtha oil. The catalyst may be boron trifluoride gas or a 1:1 molar complex of boron trifluoride and ether. The amine may be hexamethylene tetramine. After treatment of the polymerized oil with the ammonia or amine, a clear oil may be obtained by filtering off the precipitated matter and the clear oil may be distilled under reduced pressure to remove the low boiling fraction, or alternately, the clear oil may be washed with water.
