Abstract

Sewage, slaughter house waste, dairy waste, or waste from chicken packing stations, is subjected to aerobic digestion to form a sludge which is allowed to settle and is then drawn-off and forced through a centrifugal atomizer into a drying chamber together with hot air. According to the Figure (not shown), sewage is fed to an aeration chamber 5 having a diffuser 36 through a rotary comb shredder and fine mesh filter in a housing 3. The digested sewage passes through a series of baffles 4 into a settling chamber 6, supernatant liquor being run off through an outlet 9 and settled sludge being drawn back into chamber 5 below baffles 4. After sufficient build-up of sludge, as shown by a photo-electric device 10, the sludge is pumped via a pipe 12 to a centrifugal atomizer 13 at the top of a drying chamber 14 and is injected as a fine mist into heated air from a diffuser 17 concentric with the atomizer. Dried sludge passes as powder from the bottom of chamber 14 via a pneumatic transport duct 27 to a powder-air separator 29, the separated air being added to moisture and dust-laid air extracted from chamber 14 through a duct 24. Air from duct 24 passes through parallel cyclone separators 25, separated dust being passed into duct 27 and separated air being passed to diffuser 36. Another source of air may alternatively or in addition be fed to the diffuser.
