Rotary machines, for printing newspapers with varying numbers of pages which are a multiple of two, comprise a number of printing-units grouped about a common folding-apparatus, at least one of such units being an auxiliary press having one forme cylinder with two plates for perfecting twopage sheets which are incorporated with the webs from the other units, and only one plate being required for each page of the paper. As shown, the machine is capable of printing up to eighteen pages, and comprises two main units or presses A, B each of which can perfect a double-width web 1, 2 with eight-page sheets, or a singlewidth web with four-page sheets, the plates being arranged longitudinally on the cylinders as shown in Fig. 4, and only two plates to the circumference of each cylinder, one plate for each page of the paper. An auxiliary twopage unit or press C is arranged at right-angles to the units A, B. This unit also has the plates arranged longitudinally of the cylinders, and may be such as is described in Specification 104,343. The webs 1, 2, after printing, are divided by slitters 3, and the singlewidth webs from each are turned and associated by diagonal bars 5, 6 and led together to the folding and delivery apparatus 7, 8, 9. Sheets cut from the web 10 before printing, by known apparatus 11, are passed between the printing and impression cylinders 14, 12 of the unit C, and, after printing on one side by the plate on one half of the cylinder 14, are taken by a transfer cylinder 13 and directed again through the cylinders 14, 12, tail-end first, for perfecting by the plate on the other half of the cylinder 14. The two-page sheets are conveyed by a transfer cylinder 15 to the folding-apparatus 7, 8 and associated with the four-page sheets from the webs 1, 2. For printing larger numbers of pages, the units A, B may be wide enough to print triple-width webs.
