A machine for canning fish with delicate flesh, such as Cololabis saira, has a rotatable charging drum 5, Fig. 1, provided along its generatrixes with holders 4 for packing the fish, a forming drum 10 rotatable about an axis perpendicular to the charging drum and having sockets containing forms 9 corresponding in shape to cans to be filled, a plunger 11 for delivering fish from a holder into a form, a star wheel 20 for bringing empty cans to a position aligned with a filled form and a plunger 24 for pushing fish from the filled form into the empty can. Portions of fish oriented with the abdomen uppermost are fed sequentially from a trough 1 into one of eight holders 4. The holders are of rectangular form with slots in their upper parts and with a transverse dimension corresponding to the size of the fish portions to be canned. Filling of the appropriate trough continues until the movement of the pickup 7 of a contact device 8 by the fish actuates electro-magnet 3 for the descent of a blind 2. After a rotation of the drum 5 through 45 degrees, the content of a holder is discharged by a pusher 11 into a form 9 of the forming drum. Charging of a form is facilitated by the provision of a generally radial partition 9a, Fig. 2, and synchronizing discs 19, Fig. 1 rotated by gear racks 17 rigidly connected with the pusher 11. During the charging a spring loaded slide valve 12 is held open by a stop 14 engaging a tooth 16 on the slide valve. The contents of a form 9 are discharged by a pusher 24 into an empty can held in a star wheel 20. The pickup 25 of a contact device 26 breaks the current supply circuit of the machine as soon as the advance of empty cans in the feed trough 21 ceases.
