Abstract
1,043,315. H a i r waving appliances. GILLETTE CO. April 14, 1964 [April 30, 1963; May 2, 1963], No. 15502/64. Heading A4V. A hair curler removably mounted in a suction holder 24 comprises a receptacle 14, in which a tress of hair is curled and which has a mouth 12 through which a tress of hair is drawn by the suction, and a slide releasably clamping the tress to the curler, the slide being normally biased to clamping position by a spring 36 and moved to open position by engagement of a cam face 38 with the mouth of the holder when the curler is placed or sucked into the holder. The receptacle 14 is formed of a lattice of crossed cylindrical monofilaments of synthetic plastics material bonded at their intersections and has an imperforate part 18, e.g. of synthetic plastics, adhered or heat welded thereto. The curler may be automatically removed from the holder by cutting off the suction and is retained in position close to the scalp for treatment of the hair by lotions. In modifications the receptacle is polygonal in cross-section, a curler for curling close to the scalp has a shortened neck or an elastic synthetic disc having radial slots replaces the spring-urged slide. In a further modification a perforated elastic receptacle of polyurethane foam is expanded by the suction to receive a tress and contracts to clamp the tress when the suction is cut off.
