Abstract
1,043,181. Welding by pressure. L. L. LOCKSHIN. March 18, 1963 [March 20, 1962], No. 10625/63. Heading B3R. A stud for welding to a metal surface carries a vented heat resistance ferrule which in turn supports an annular flux disc surrounding the end of the stud. A stud 20, Fig. 1 (not shown), having a conical end portion to engage the work is provided with a ceramic or phenolic resin ferrule 27 having a bore 28 to slidably fit the stud and an enlarged bore 29, Fig. 2 (not shown), ), to slidably receive a flux body 22. The ferrule is provided with channels 30, 31 in Fig. 3 (not shown) in its lower wall to permit gas escape, the channels being arranged at an angle to the radii of the ferrule and having diverging walls. The flux body 22 is provided by an annular body 23 with radial arms 25, 26 extending from the body and is made of aluminium or iron or a mixture of at least one of silver, brass, copper, aluminium oxide, iron or iron oxide and a combustible organic carrier, e.g. an ester or mixed ester of cellulose or a vinyl resin, a plasticizer and a volatile organic solvent. The fluxing material forms at least 50% of the mixture and the carrier 50% or less. The components are mixed together and formed into a sheet from which the flux body, which may be a simple annular body, is stamped out or is inserted into moulds. The bodies are cured, e.g. by heating and the final body obtained. The mixture may comprise 92-96% fluxing material and 4-8% of carrier. An example of a fluxing composition is 46% iron oxide powder, 46% aluminium powder and 8% carrier.
