In an electric calculating machine having a multi-digit keyboard store K (Fig. 2, not shown), a single bank of multiplier keys MK, and a register R, actuation of a multiplier key MK causes the number on the keyboard K to be entered into the register R once, and if the multiplier key MK is greater than unity causes the twelves complement of the multiplier number to be entered into a buffer store BR and subsequent recycling of the machine adding the keyboard number K into the register R and stepping the buffer store BR once each cycle until the buffer store registers zero, and then one further cycle in which the keyboard number K is added once more into the register R, thus providing the product of the keyboard number K and multiplier number MK in the register R. Actuation of further multiplier keys MK adds the keyboard number K into the register R in positions shifted to the right of previous positions.
