[Also in Division F2] A gate valve body, of rectangular welded plate construction, is reinforced around the aligned openings in the end walls against internal pressure and the stresses applied by connected piping by superposed plate portions of substantial thickness welded thereto, the end walls being reinforced by ribs extending laterally thereacross. The valve body 10 is formed of flat rectangular end walls 11 and side walls 12 closed at one end by a bonnet assembly 13 through which passes the operating stem 15 attached to the gate 14 and, at the other end, by a flat plate 52. Thick reinforcing plates or forgings 18 are welded to the front walls 11 and connected piping 27, around the aligned openings 26, and the plates 18 are machined to receive annular sealing assemblies or hub sections 26; additional reinforcing means is provided, by ribs 31 for the front walls 11 and by ribs 36 for the plates 18 welded between the end walls 11 and side wall plates 41 which are cut, as at 42, to the outline of the ribs 31 and 36. The plates 41 are also welded to the plates 18 and each side wall plate 41 may be discontinuous between each pair of the outlined configurations 42 and between plates 18 and adjacent configurations 42. The corners 32 and 37 of ribs 31 and 36 (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) are cut away and the walls 11 may be prestressed by welding the ribs to the plates 41 to leave clearances between the edge 33 and the wall 11 which is displaced upon shrinkage of the weld therebetween. Similarly, the edges 38 of the ribs 36 attached to plates 18 may be non-linear and the plates 18 prestressed by welding out from the centre 18 before welding the ribs 36 to the plates 41.
