Abstract
1, 042, 563. Filters; magnetic separators. D. BOTSTIBER. Feb. 7, 1964, No. 5336/64. Headings B1D and B2J. A liquid filtering device comprises a perforated metallic screen 68 through which all liquid passes between inlet 64 and outlet 66, and magnetic elements 76 which establish a magnetic field between them and a sleeve 72 of paramagnetic material so causing magnetizable particles to build up on the sleeve and screen. An electrical circuit, in which the magnetic elements are included has an indicating device 86 actuated whenever a large electrically conducting particle or an accumulation of such particles completes a conducting path for the current between the sleeve 72 and any one of the magnetic elements 76. The magnetic elements have spaced arms 76 with openings therebetween for liquid flow, and adjacent plates are oppositely polarized. They are held apart by metal spacers on a metal rod 78 which is connected through the indicator 86 and an electric current source 88 to earth, the metal housing 60 being earthed at 92. The indicating device 86 may also be actuated in response to a flow failure within the filter by means of a valve unit 89 earthed at 102. Normally in response to liquid pressure a check valve 98 is urged away from the unit 89, but whenever liquid pressure ceases the check valve is closed under the action of a spring 100 so providing a conducting path for flow of current and causing the actuator of the indicating device. The valve unit 89 also has a pressure responsive valve 104 which normally closes ports 106 under action of a spring 108 but moves under excessive pressure due to clogging to open ports 106. This movement causes valve 104 to engage a contact element 110 or rod 78 and complete a circuit through the indicator 86.
