Abstract

1,042,547. Tobacco smoke filters. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Aug. 19, 1965 [Aug. 19, 1964], No. 35556/65. Heading A2C. A filter element comprises a tube made from a strip of film of a polymeric material F and short fibres 25 made from a polymeric material adhering to the inner surface of the tube and extending radially inwardly thereof. The filters are made by applying a strip of adhesive to one surface of the film, inducing an electrostatic charge on the film and passing the charged film over short fibres so that they are attracted lengthwise to the film and adhere by one end of the adhesive surface. The film is then passed through a garniture and formed into a tube with the fibres extending inwardly. In one example, the film is cellulose acetate 29mm. wide and 0.1mm. thick, the fibres are 5-6mm. in average length and the adhesive is glyerol triaceate. In a second example,the film is polypropylene 29mm. wide and 0.05mm. thick, the fibres have an average length of 5mm. and a denier of 0.4 and the adhesive is neoprene. The polymeric material may also comprise polyethylene, polystyrene or a terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol or bis (hydroxymethyl) cyclo hexane polyester. The adhesive may comprise a glycerol mono-, di-, or tri-acetate; a glycerol mono-, di, or tri-propionate; an acetate or propionate ester of a polyoxyethylene; a phthalic acid ester of an alkyl alcohol, triethyl citrate, a neoprene glue, an epoxy glue, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride or a butadiene-styrene resin.
