Abstract
The invention comprises 1,2,4-tris(1-hydroxy-isopropyl)benzene and its dehydration products 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-5-isopropenylphthalane (I) and 1,1,33-tetramethyl-5-(1-hydroxyisopropyl)-phthalane (II). The triol is made by trimerizing 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol at not less than 60 DEG C. in presence of a catalyst comprising (a) an unsubstituted borohydride of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, (b) a Co salt, anhydrous or complexed with liquids, (c) NO or compounds containing the NO3-, NO2- or ClO4-ions; (b) and (c) may be constituted by a single compound. The molar ratio (a) : (b) is 0.25-4.0 : 1. Dehydration of the triol gives I under acid conditions, but II using basic alumina.ALSO:A catalyst for trimerising methylbutynol (see Division C2) comprises (a) M(BH4)n where M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal of valency n, (b) a Co salt, anhydrous or complexed with liquids and (c) NO or compounds containing NO3-, NO2- or ClO4-, the molar ratio (a):(b) being 0.25-4.0:1. Exemplified catalysts are Co(NO3)2, 6H2O/NaBH4, CoCl2, 6H2O/NaNO3/NaBH4, Ba(NO2)2, H2O/CoSO4 7H2O/NaBH4 and CoCl2 6H2O/NO/NaBH4.
