Abstract
1,042,345. Record cards. SVENSKA DATAREGISTER A.B. June 14, 1963 [June 21, 1962], No. 23792/63. Heading G4M. A record card is provided with parallel non- reflective stripes 2 defining reflective code areas 4 therebetween, and data are recorded by modifying, e.g. by colouring, the reflective characteristics of selected areas 4. In the example, shown, the top two areas 4 are left unmodified to act as a start code, the next area 4 is used to record a parity bit, and the remaining areas 4 are used in groups of four to record in binary coded decimal code, the least significant bit being uppermost. An unmodified area 4 is classed as " 1 " and a modified area 6 is classed as " 0," this choice enabling feeding of the card in the wrong direction to be detected. The elongated nature of each area 4 also enables correct sensing to take place even when substantial skew of the record occurs, as indicated by arrows A, B. Sensing may be performed by two photo-sensitive devices both of which respond to areas 4, but only one of which responds to areas 6, the latter device providing shift pulses for a shift register while the other device provides data pulses.
