In a dynamo-electric machine, e.g. a coal face equipment powering electric motor, having a laminated rotor 6 carried by a shaft and a stator within a casing, the shaft incorporates a plurality of axial passages 4 extending approximately the length of the rotor at the ends of which the passage ends are respectively connected by radial passages 8 to a corresponding inlet or outlet passage formed in the shaft, each radial passage 8 also being formed in the shaft between the inlet or outlet passage and the respective axial passage so that the latter form a plurality of parallel ducts through which coolant, e.g. water, can be circulated from a source outside the casing. The inlet and/or outlet passage may be connected to a corresponding pipe 12 via a sealing chamber defined by a stationary plate 13 carrying a spring- loaded pressure ring 14 which urges a sealing ring 15 against a contact ring 9 carried by the shaft end, but alternatively either connection may be by the radial construction of Fig. 7 (not shown). The casing is stated to be flameproof, and the stator is similarly cooled by water flowing in series or parallel through a plurality of pipes.
