Abstract
1,170,754 Cooling large electrical generators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 May, 1967 [30 June, 1966], No. 29475/66. Heading H2A. In a large electrical generator having in a gas-tight casing 19 a rotor 1 carrying fan means which circulate in a series flow cooling hydrogen gas through axial and radial duets 5, 7 in the rotor, the annular gap between the rotor and stator, and outwardly extending ducts 17 in the stator core 15 to return, after cooling, to the fan means inlet(s), a small proportion, e.g. less than 10%, of the fan means discharge is received directly by radial ducts 33 in the stator core end parts which are liable to larger stray load losses, and seals 18 are provided between the rotor and stator to preclude any intermingling of this proportion with the larger proportions of gas passing across the annular gap. The fan means may comprise two fans 23 of either the H.P. centrifugal or multistage axial type, having shrouds 25, and the gas is cooled by water-cooled indirect heat exchangers 29. The casing end walls 19E have gas-tight seals 21, the rotor is supported by bearings 3, the stator core ducts 17 are between packets of laminations, and the stator conductors are hollow and cooled by the throughflow of demineralized water flowing through headers 31.
