Abstract

A totalizator comprises a number of ticketissuing machines 10 (Figs. 1A and 1B, not shown), in which bets may be registered, a scanner 18 continuously scanning them in sequence until it is held by a signal B.G. from one requiring attention, when a B.I.G. pulse orders the unit 10 to transmit bet information over lines 13-15 to a distributer 12, where it is sent to 23 for checking (for example, that not more than one runner key has been operated), and then to registers 32-35 where the amount of the bet is added into an appropriate runner accumulator and a total accumulator. The information is also recorded on tape units 38 and 39. If no error has been detected in this sequence of operations a signal V.O.C. is transmitted to control units 11 where it orders print-out of a ticket in the operative unit and over line 20 further stepping of the scanner. The information in units 32-35 (in which duplication is used for further security) is fed to a digital-analogue converter feeding an "approximate-odds" calculator which through a servo-system up-dates the displayed information. The information recorded on tape may be subsequently processed in units 71-75 and in computer 56 which calculates the odds on doubles and other combination bets. A further computer 63 receives as input data the amounts actually paid out for course book-keeping purposes, and various display systems 60-62 are also provided.
