Abstract

1,040,708. Machine tool details. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. July 3, 1964 [July 8, 1963], No. 26972/63. Headings B3B and B3C. A drilling or like machine comprises a vertically movable tool turret 1, a work-table 12 formed as an open frame, clamps 6 for clamping the work 5, a support 10 mounted below the table for aligning the tool being used, and also for supporting the work, and means for moving the table relative to the turret. Six drills are carried by the turret and they are guided by drill bushes in a plate 2, which is indexed along with the turret. The turret drive has a range of nine spindle speeds, and nine spindle feeds, the speeds being supplied by an electric motor, and the feeds being supplied by an hydraulic unit 4. Table 12 is slidable along rods 13, 14 by a shaft 15; the rods being supported on a frame 18, which in turn is movable along rods 19, 20 by a shaft 21. Clamps 6 are slidable on a bar 8, and a retractable work stop 22 is provided. Turret 1 and plate 2 are slidable on rods 30, Fig. 5 (not shown), and a plate device 31 controls the indexing of the plate to correspond with that of the turret, which indexing is effected pneumatically. As the turret is vertically movable the drive shaft 33 has a flexible coupling. Coolant is supplied to the drill and work via a pipe 36, Fig. 2 (not shown), the coolant being caught by a tray 37, Fig. 1 (not shown). A control unit 3, Fig. 1 (not shown) controls the machine by means of a punched tape which is read by an electromechanical or a photoelectric reader. Drive shaft 33 is driven by an electric motor through a belt drive. A variable-speed device for varying the spindle drive comprises a rotatable control shaft which is angularly adjusted to select the required speed. The shaft is driven through an electromagnetic clutch, by a reversible electric motor, which also drives a multi-position rotary switch through a gear train. The punched tape indicates that a particular speed is required, and the contact of the switch, the clutch, and the motor are energized. When the arm of the switch reaches the energized contact the clutch is disengaged, and the motor stops, thus stopping the shaft at the required position. The feed of the turret is effected by the hydraulic cylinder 4, a variable flow valve being used to vary the feed rate, and the required feed is selected by the tape and a second rotary switch, and a solenoid valve actuates the hydraulic cylinder. In operation, the workpiece is clamped by clamps 6, and stop 22 is retracted. A start button on unit 40 is actuated to start the feeding of the punched tape. Table. 12 is moved by hydraulic rams, and the feed and speed and the particular tool are selected. The first hole is drilled, and then the cycle is repeated after indexing turret 1 and plate 2. It is stated that the machine may carry out punching, forming, slotting or assembling operations.
