In a bakery proofer or cooler, articles to be treated are pushed from a belt conveyer 16 on to shelves 22 of racks R which are raised by an endless elevator 26. An endless advancing mechanism 27 transfers the racks on to horizontal upper rails 20 whence they are lowered by an endless lowerator 28. The racks are then transferred on to lower rails 21 by an endless advancing mechanism 29, the rack nearest the elevator 26 being pushed into position a ready for raising by the elevator. The articles are discharged from the rack shelves 22 on to a belt conveyer 18. Drive.-For the elevator 26, pairs of shafts 86 are driven continuously but rack pinion and pawl mechanisms, Fig. 3 (not shown), driven by crank arms 88 and connecting rods 90 from the shafts 86 produce a step-by-step movement of the elevator. The temporary stopping periods permit loading and unloading of the articles. A single motor 30 drives the conveyers, all other than the elevator 26 being driven continuously. Engagement of racks R by conveyers, Fig. 2 (not shown).-Each rack has two laterally projecting shafts 24a engageable by lugs 82, 74, 52, and 60 provided on the conveyer chains 80, 69, 47, and 54 respectively. The main portions of the shafts 24a carry flanged rollers 25 which engage the rails 20, 21. Advancing conveyer 27.-Each chain 69 is trained around a sprocket 68 and around a fixed guide plate 70.
