[Also in Division G1] A timer for photographic printing exposure times comprises a capacitor charged by a photodiode illuminated by a pilot lamp and a switching unit operated at a predetermined capacitor potential to terminate exposure. A capacitor appropriate to the emulsion sensitivity is selected from capacitors 21 by switches 21a ... 21d. Exposure is initiated by a pushbutton 11 which closes contact 2 to open the shutter and opens contact 5 to allow photo-diode 20 to charge the selected capacitor. The charging current is determined by the brightness of lamp 23 connected to the same supply as the printing lamp which is governed by resistors 25 which are selected in accordance with the gamma to which the emulsion is to be subjected on development and a calibrating resistor 26. This brightness is further modified by a diaphragm 24 adjusted in accordance with the density of the original. The switching unit 12 is of a type in which current between electrodes 13 and 15 is interrupted when the potential on an electrode 14 relative to electrode 13 rises above a threshold value. The potential on electrode 13 is determined by a resistor 17 selected in accordance with filter factors and a resistor set in accordance with the degree of enlargement employed. When conduction between electrodes 13 and 15 is interrupted, relay 10 drops out, opening contact 2 to close the shutter. In a similar ancilliary apparatus for determining development times resistor 18 and shutter 24 are omitted and a fixed capacitor is used in place of capacitors 21. The resistors 25 are selected in accordance with the type of emulsion in use and resistors 17 in accordance with the development gamma. The ancilliary apparatus may be included in the same unit as the timer of the invention, components being used in common.
