Abstract

104,022. Downs, N. T., and Tonks, A. H. Feb. 18, 1916. Spring devices.-In spring frames for motorcycles &c. wherein the back-fork and saddle-stay members are capable of angular movement with the road wheel and the saddle stays are coupled to the main frame by a pair of spring-controlled levers, these levers are pivoted on opposite sides of the seat pillar and are connected with the movable abutment of a coiled shock-absorbing spring, which is located in the plane of the frame, in front of the seat tube, and normally parallel to, but not co-axial with, -either the seat tube or an horizontal top tube of the main frame. The levers may be of triangular or reinforced bell-crank construction, and main and rebound compression springs may be arranged about a rod parallel to the seat tube. Or a main compression spring only, disposed parallel to the seat tube or to an horizontal top member, may be used. As shown in Fig. 2, the levers g carry an abutment h<1> for a main compression spring i parallel to the seat tube, a rebound tension spring j being disposed within the spring i. The rear portion of the main frame is triangulated as shown by the members b, c, d. According to the Provisional Specification 4593/16, (1) a tension spring underneath an horizontal frame tube may be used, or two springs may be arranged side by side, and one or more compression springs may be fitted within the tension springs, and (2) springs may be arranged between intermediate points on the levers and abutments on the rigid frame.
