1,040,202. Cleaning underwater surfaces. J. C. SIERRA and P. PINCE. April 13, 1965 [April 13, 1964; Feb. 11, 1965], No. 15809/65. Heading B7M. A brushing device for underwater cleaning of an immersed structure or ship's hull comprises a casing 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), a brush element 2 fitted to a shaft of a hydraulic motor in the casing 1, spigots 3, 4 to which lines for the supply and discharge of the pressure liquid for driving the motor can be connected, a handle 5 to control a valve for distributing the pressure liquid in the cleaner and grips 6, 7 for a diver to use the device. The construction of the valve is such that flow of liquid is not stopped when the valve is operated to stop the motor, but by-passes the motor to return to the pumping source. Positions 5a, 5b, 5c of handle 5 give respectively rotation at maximum speed in one direction, stop position and rotation at maximum speed in the opposite direction. The brush motor may be placed in a buoyancy chamber having adjustable ballast valves for ease of handling by the diver.
