Abstract

1,039,917. Web coating apparatus. AMERICAN BILTRITE RUBBER CO.Inc. June 10, 1964 [July 12, 1963], No. 23981/64. Heading D1L. [Also in Divisions B2 and B5] Belting is produced by continuously feeding a strip into contact with a travelling conveyer blanket at a predetermined point in its travel, maintaining a pool of liquid polyurethane on the blanket beneath the strip and in a position in advance of and adjacent to the line of contact between the strip and the conveyer blanket, maintaining a second pool of liquid polyurethane upon the upper surface of the strip near its line of contact with the travelling blanket thereby coating both sides of the strip as the strip is progressed by the conveyer blanket covering the strip as it is coated with an overlying blanket and then subjecting the polyurethane to curing heat while the strip is being advanced between the two blankets e.g. by passage over a heated table. As shown in Fig. 1, more than one strip may be passed continuously over the travelling conveyer blanket in spaced relationship and a pool of liquid polyurethane is maintained between the lowermost strip and the travelling blanket at a point in advance of the path of travel and adjacent to the line of contact between the bottom strip and the travelling blanket and between the or each additional intermediate strip in advance of the path of travel and adjacent to the line of contact of the intermediate strip or each intermediate strip and the underlying strip and in maintaining a pool of liquid polyurethane in advance of the path of travel of the superposed strip or strips and the subposed strip and covering the upper surface of each intermediate strip as it is coated with an overlying blanket, and effecting the curing of the polyurethane while the strips are advanced between the blankets. The blankets may be made of a non-adherent elastomeric material e.g. "Teflon" (Registered Trade Mark) or rubber-like elastomer which may be a silicone or sprayed with silicone. The pools of liquid polyurethane may be maintained in substantially constant volume. Gauging means for maintaining a constant predetermined thickness of the applied polyurethane coating may be provided. Liquid polyurethane may be supplied to the pools through transverse superposed members 29 which may be caused to reciprocate transversely relatively to the travelling strip or strips and blankets. The strip or strips may be of textile fabric e.g. of cotton woven from twisted or untwisted strands, or having warp strands of "Dacron" (Registered Trade Mark) and a filler of nylon. The underlying conveyer blanket may extend substantially beyond the overlying blanket or blankets to provide an open portion for the reception of the strip or strips. The strip to be coated may be drawn over a curved gauge member located behind the pool of liquid polyurethane so that the thickness of the coating is gauged as the strip is drawn below the curved gauge member.
