Abstract

A golf practice device comprises a target, screen constructed to minimise the rebound of a ball therefrom, and means immediately behind the screen for measuring the force of impact of the ball on the screen and connected to apparatus for recording and/or indicating the force of the impact. The screen may be of hardboard, plywood or metal, faced with a cushion of polythene, baize or felt, or with a pneumatic cushion, in which case the impact detectors may be piezo-electric crystals or strain gauges. Alternatively, the screen may comprise a sheet of nylon or polythene backed by a volume of fluid, and a pressure-responsive device used to assess the pressure change in the fluid when a ball hits the screen. The screen is preferably suitable for reflecting the image of a golf course projected thereon, or is painted with a view of a fairway, and the device is preferably used in conjunction with an automatic tag which may be coupled to a slide projector, and on a playing surface which slopes towards a channel for collecting spent balls and returning them to the tee.
