Abstract
A chemical compound such as an amine or amine salt is produced electrochemically by using free radicals obtained by dehydrogenation at a potential at least as high as that required to form the radicals, the radicals being reacted with a chemical compound or with other radicals. Dehydrogenation is carried out at one electrode which may be a sintered or activated poured electrode (i.e. comprising two parallel conductive sieves between which a pulverulent or granular catalyst is provided), and the counter-electrode may be one at which oxygen is consumed or hydrogen produced. The electrolyte may be KOH solution containing an alcohol, such as methanol, ethanol, glycol or glycerol, to be dehydrogenated at a working potential more positive than the open-circuit potential and in the presence of a substance such as hydrazine having an open-circuit potential more negative than that of the alcohol. The catalyst may be a borohydride of activated carbonyl nickel.
