Abstract

Organic iodides and bromides are prepared by reacting an inorganic iodide or bromide with an alcohol having up to 20 carbon atoms in the presence of hydrogen chloride, the reaction being carried out in a liquid medium. The inorganic iodides and bromides are defined as being those ionic iodides and bromides wherein the cations are metallic or ammonium ions. Examples describe the production of organic iodides, the corresponding chlorides being formed as by-products in some cases.
