A method of surface grinding the end faces of springs, comprises oscillating the springs in a curved path in front of the working face of a rotating grinding wheel, and simultaneously applying the springs against the grinding wheel with a substantially constant pressure. In apparatus for carrying out a method, the springs 16, 17 are held in clamps 6, 8 and 7, 9 at the end of an arm 3 on a shaft 2 disposed parallel to the axis of the grinding wheel. Each clamp consists of a fixed jaw 6, 7, and a movable jaw 8, 9. The latter jaws are secured to rods 10, 11 slidable in bores 10a, 1 in the arm 3 and are coarsely adjustable by threaded spindles 14, 15 which have hand wheels 12, 13 and are connected to intermediate pieces 22, 23 which, in turn, are connected to the rods 24, 25 of doubleacting pneumatic or hydraulic jacks 26, 27 which effect fine adjustment of the jaws 8, 9 for clamping the springs. Inserts 18 . . . 21 may be removed from the jaws to enable them to hold larger springs. A lever 35 extends from the shaft 2 and is connected to a pneumaticallyactuated jack 37 for effecting swinging of the arm 3 so as to carry the springs across the face 5a of the grinding wheel. A guide rod 38 is connected by arms 39, 40 to the shaft 2 and the arm 3 is slidable along the shaft and rod by a pneumatic jack to urge the ends of the springs against the face of the grinding wheel at a substantially constant pressure. Adjustable stops 44, 45 coact with a contact to stop the movement of the arm 3 along the shaft at its end positions. The lower part of the grinding wheel runs in a container 28 partially filled with liquid which is picked up by the wheel and caused, by centrifugal force, to flow along channels 31, 32 and be directed by a baffle 33 and an outlet 34 to the grinding areas.
