Abstract
In a continuous non-catalytic process for the production of an alkyl chloride having 3-6 carbon atoms by esterification of the corresponding alkanol with hydrochloric acid at 100-140 DEG C., the reaction mixture is such that it contains 30-45% by weight of water and 13-17% by weight of hydrochloric acid. The process is particularly applicable to the preparation of butyl chloride. The Specification describes suitable apparatus for carrying out the process wherein the reaction circuit comprises a reactor and a vaporizing and dispersing device in which the reaction mixture is vaporized prior to entering a distillation column which has a decanter at the level at which the by-product alkylene oxide is selectively concentrated, the said decanter being connected to a secondary column wherein the ether is isolated, the head vapour from the main column being passed to a condenser and thence to a decanter in which the alkyl chloride is separated from the water. Examples describe the preparation of butyl chloride.
