1,038,122. Tea leaf withering apparatus. MARSHALL'S TEA MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Dec. 4, 1962 [Dec. 4, 1961], No. 43223/61. Heading F4G. A tea-leaf withering apparatus wherein a heated air flow may flow upwardly or downwardly through a bed or beds of the leaf comprises a chamber 1, Fig. 1, divided throughout its length by support members in the form of troughs 6 separated by gangways 7, each trough comprising frame members 8, Fig. 3, supporting a mesh bottom 9 for the tea-leaf, below which bottom a compartment 13 is formed which is divided from the remainder of the chamber by sheet metal walls 14 to provide the side walls of the troughs. Partitions 16 at each end of the chamber extend the full height and width of the chamber and have openings, each of which is closed by two sliding doors 18 which connect the troughs with an air inlet chest 21 having air heaters 24 at one end of the chamber, and an air outlet chest 22 having extractor fans 25 at the other, whereby the heated air may be supplied either to the upper compartment or one or more of the lower compartments and withdrawn from either one or more of the lower compartments or the upper compartment respectively. Doors 20 in the partitions 16 provide access to the gangways for operatives and means for increasing the resistance of the flow of air through the mesh at the trough sides comprises perforated sheets 30, an extra layer of mesh material or to slope the edges of the mesh.
