Abstract

1,037,972. Adjusting and folding seat backs; tables combined with seats. BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS CORPORATION. Oct. 24, 1962 [July 24, 1961 (2)], No. 18176/61. Headings A4H and A4J. [Also in Division E2] An aircraft seat wide enough to form at least one wider seat or at least two narrower seats comprises a single squab 1 and a seat back made in sections 2, 3, 4 and 5 capable of independent movement about a horizontal axis 59. Bolts 11, 12 are provided for interlocking adjacent sections into a combined section so that they move together or unlocking them so that they can move independently of one another. The back sections of the seat are angularly adjustable by a hydraulic jack mechanism operated by a push button 28 or 54 connected to rods 29, 30, 34 and bell cranks 25, 31 incorporated in moveable arm rests 8, 9 and rods 50, 53 and bell cranks 51 in fixed arm rests 6, 7, the lower rods being connected to a valve on the hydraulic jacks 68. There is no mechanical connection between the rod 30 and bell crank 31 so when an arm is removed its hydraulic reclining mechanism is automatically disconnected. In order that the seat backs should tip forward on impact a friction disc assembly is incorporated in the linkage of the reclining mechanism. The seat back is connected to a tube 58, forming the lower rear transverse member of the seat framework, and the hydraulic jack 68 by links 62, 63 and brackets 56, 57 with friction discs 64, 65, 66 interposed between them. The upper end of the link 62 is connected by a bolt 70 to the back 61. In the two seat position when the friction disc assembly is not needed in the centre arm the bolt 70 is removed from the housing 78 and the assembly rendered inoperative. The backs of the seats have attached tables which can be adjusted for different numbers of seats illustrated in Figs. 18-21 (not shown). The seats may have part of the backs rigidly fixed to the seat squabs and the back sections pivoted to the top of the fixed section.
