Abstract
A sealant composition comprises a fluorine substituted olefin polymer and a silane derivative which is a substituted silico methane compound having at least one amino group attached to a carbon atom. Suitable polymers are copolymers of vinylidene fluoride with hexafluoropropylene or trifluorochloroethylene. Suitable silane derivatives are g -amino propyl triethoxy mono silane and a commercial silane derivative having both primary and secondary carbon attached amino groups, an ethyl group which may be attached to the nitrogen atom in a secondary amino group, and methoxy groups. In the examples, the polymer is compounded with carbon black, magnesium oxide and diallylamine, heat treated and then dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone. To this solution is added either a solution of one or more curing agents in methyl ethyl ketone followed by adding a methanolic solution of a silane derivative to the resultant mixture, or a methanolic solution containing both curing agents and silane derivative. Of the curing agents mentioned, those exemplified are 1:6-hexanedithiol and tri-n-amylamine. The composition may be used for bonding aluminium alloys and is resistant to high temperatures in the presence of liquid fuels and to the weather, and it is particularly useful for sealing joints in aircraft fuel tanks.
