A material for the production of filters for smoking materials, consits of a foil comprising a highly adsorptive substance in fine fiibrous form or a mixture of such substances bound in a binding agent, and provided with one or more adsorbents and/or absorbents which can physically and/or chemically filter out selectively components of tobacco smoke. The adsorbent and/or absorbent may be active carbon, silica gel, asbestos fibres or polyethylene glycol, and the basic foil material may be peat fibres, preferably of a size of from 50 Á to 1.5 mm. The adsorbent and/or absorbent material may be anchored to the surface of the foil or embedded therein and filaments or other reinforcing materials may be introduced into the foil in a longitudinal orientation. Perfuming or aromatic substances may be added to the filters. The filter material is prepared from a pourable or spreadable mix prepared from a fibrous adsorptive substance, a binding agent, a volatile solvent and an absorbent and/or adsorbent. The mix is continuously spread on a continuously moving support and dried on the support during its further transport, the resulting foil being cut into predetermined lengths. The foil may be subjected to a crepeing treatment before being cut. The reinforcing filaments may be introduced into the body of the foil in the course of the continuous production of the foil from the mix.
