Abstract

Filamentary tows of stereo-regular polypropylene or of polyesters based on terephthalic acid have variable shrinkage characteristics along their length, a shrinkage between 10 and 60% when immersed in boiling water for 10 minutes, with a minimum spread of shrinkage of at least 25%, and an optical birefringence of 30 x 10-3 to 200 x 10-3 (polyesters) or 15 x 10-3 to 27 x 10-3 (polypropylene). The period of variation of the shrinkage corresponds to a tow length greater than 5 times the shortest fibre length into which the tow is to be converted, but less than 100 m. The tows are made by subjecting undrawn filaments having an optical birefringence of 0 to 12 x 10-3 to a drawing process in which either the draw ratio or the temperature is continuously varied between defined limits with a substantially uniform period of variation. Examples describe the preparation of tows of polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate having shrinkage characteristics which vary sinusoidally along the length of the filaments at frequencies of 4.0 x 10-5 cm-1 to 7.7 x 10-4 cm-1. The tows are converted into staple fibres and spun yarns.
