March 3, 1916 Warps, balling.-In warping and balling apparatus for ribbon warps, in which a measuring-roller serves as a feed-roller on to which the threads are pressed by the full weight of a pair of rollers, the friction drive of the winding-spool is adjusted by applying weights axially to, and consequently evenly over, the surfaces of the friction disks, whereby the tension of the threads between the spool and the feed-roller can be regulated. As shown, the threads from a creel pass over and under lease-rods, through a reed 2, between a driven measuring and feed roller 18 and heavy rubber-covered rollers 17, to a traversing guide comprising a pivoted fork w with inclined prongs and parallel pins v on a member y, which is slidably mounted on the upper end of a traverse rod p and may be adjusted in position by a screw z during the operation of the machine. The warps are wound on a spool 4 arranged at right-angles to the roller 18 and driven from the main shaft G by bevel-gearing, a spindle 5, and friction disks 9, 10, the friction between the disks being regulated by removable weights 16 on a flanged sleeve 14 on the end of the spool spindle 11. The rod p is reciprocated by a lever m with a pivot pin q adjustable in a fixed slot t by means of a screw and a hand-wheel v'. The lever m is adjustably connected by a rod k to one arm h of a bell-crank lever, the other arm carrying a bowl f engaged by a grooved cam b on a driven shaft.
