Abstract

The invention comprises an aromatic polymer produced by heating an aromatic sulphonyl halide containing at least two sulphonyl halide groups each linked to a nuclear carbon atom, with an aromatic compound having replaceable nuclear hydrogen atoms, under conditions such that sulphur dioxide and a hydrogen halide are evolved. Intermediate polymers may be obtained and converted to polymers of higher molecular weight by heating, optionally with further aromatic sulphonyl halide. In examples, polymers are obtained from bis-(phenoxybiphenyl) ether and diphenyl ether 4,41-disulphonyl chloride, from diphenoxyterphenyl and benzene-1,3-disulphonyl chloride, from diphenoxyquaterphenyl and biphenyl-4,41-disulphonyl chloride, from bis-dibenzofuranyldiphenyl ether and diphenyl ether 4,41-disulphonyl chloride, from quinquephenyls and benzene-1,3-disulphonyl chloride, from septaphenyls and benzene-1,3-disulphonyl chloride, from terphenyls and benzene-1,3-disulphonyl chloride, and from diphenyl ether and benzene - 1,3 - disulphonyl chloride.
