[Also in Division B5] Apparatus for heat-seal ing filled bags or sacks of thermoplastic material, of the type in which mutually contacting edges of the bags are moved by a pair of conveyer belts 22, 23, from which the bags protrude, past a heating device, is characterized in that the heating device comprises radiant heating rods 29, 30 disposed on opposite sides of the edges of bags and spaced therefrom, and in that cooperating pressure rollers 15 . . . 18 press together the heated edges as they emerge from between the rods 29, 30. Shafts of conveyer rollers 9 . . . 14 and the rollers 15 . . . 18 are mounted in bars 1, 2 and the rollers 11 . . . 14 are positioned to guide the belts 22, 23 along a slightly zig-zag path. A variable speed motor 19 drives the rollers 17, 18 through gears 20, 21, 22 and the bolts 22, 23, preferably V-belts, drive the rollers 9 . . . 16. The top edges of the bags to be sealed are levelled by a bar 28 as they are fed over rollers 36. The rods 29, 30 are suspended so that they can expand longitudinally without lateral distortion in an internally reflecting shield 33, Fig. 4, secured by bolts 34, 35, Fig. 2, to straps 5, 6 extending between the bars 1, 2. To prevent the bag walls melting below the desired level watercooled pipes 31, 32 are provided.
