Apparatus for producing longitudinal welded seams in a thermoplastic tube in a tubular bagwrapping machine of the type in which a tube of thermoplastic wrapping material 3 is formed from at least one web of wrapping material by welding the longitudinal edges of said web or webs together, said tube then being formed into filled packages by the formation of transverse welded seams and filling with the goods to be packaged, is characterized in that the superimposed longitudinal edges of the wrapping material 3 pass between at least one pair of rollers 1, 2 resiliently urged together and a heater 11, 17 is situated in close proximity to the rollers 1, 2 so that the heat of the heater is transmitted to the rollers 1, 2 by radiation and convection. As shown, the material 3 passes between three pairs of rollers 1, 2 secured on shafts 6, 16 mounted in parts 5, 15 of a housing. One of the rollers 1 is driven by a device (not shown) and the rollers 1, 2 are synchronously rotated by meshing tooth wheels 10, 18 mounted on the shafts 6, 16. The drive from one pair of rollers is transmitted to the other pairs by toothed wheels 9 meshing with the wheels 10. The heater comprises blocks 11, 17 heated by thermostatically controlled elements 12, 13, preferably electrical resistance heating elements. An air gap is left between the blocks 11, 17 and the shafts 6, 16 to prevent heating thereof and further insulation may be provided between the blocks 11, 17 and the shafts 6, 16 which may be hollow and have cooling air circulated therethrough. The upper ends of the parts 5, 15 are hinged together at 14 and urged together by a spring 144 (Fig. 3, not shown). The lower ends are held together by a pawl 19 engaging a lug 200 on a shaft 20, the pressure between the rollers 1, 2 being adjustable by moving an element 151 by a knob 22 to adjust the pressure exerted by a spring 21. A pair or pairs of rollers may be situated outside the blocks 11, 17 so as to cool the welded seams.
