Abstract

1,036,659. Bearings. BARDEN CORPORATION. Oct. 8, 1964 [Oct. 10, 1963], No. 41063/64. Heading F2A. A bearing assembly comprises a spherical fluid bearing combined with a cylindrical fluid bearing. In an embodiment, a spherical hydrodynamic fluid bearing 24 and a cylindrical hydrodynamic fluid bearing 42 have a common shaft 22, which carries an armature 20 of an electric motor 10 thereon. The bearing 24 has a two-part housing 28, 30 connected by a screw 34 and mounted in a casing 12 of the motor 10, and the bearing 42, which is self-aligning, has a spherical member 44, having a central bore 46 for the shaft 22, and has a two-part housing 50, 52 connected by a screw 56 and mounted in an end-plate 14 of the casing 12, the latter having a stator 16 therein. In another embodiment a spherical hydrostatic fluid bearing 70, Fig. 2 (not shown), and a cylindrical hydrostatic fluid bearing 88 have a common shaft 68. Pressurized fluid is supplied to a clearance 80 of the bearing 70, via an inlet 82, an annular space 84 and passages 86; and pressurized fluid is supplied to a clearance 94 of the bearing 88 via an inlet 102, an annular space 104, passages 106, annular spaces 108 and passages 110. The rotary movement of the spherical member 44, Fig. 1 (not shown), may be limited by pins 112, 114, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), mounted therein and co-operating with recesses 116, 118 in the two-part housing 50, 52.
