Abstract
1,036,653. Chucks. ALFRED HERBERT Ltd. June 21, 1965 [June 20, 1964], No. 25609/64. Heading B3B. A work holder comprises devices 1, 2 connected in use by a workpiece on an axis 5, and indexing means including a member 3 having a number of flat faces corresponding to the number of indexed positions required and a wedge 18 connected to a one-way device 21 which enables the wedge to be moved against one of the faces when the workpiece has been indexed to a required position. In operation, pneumatic means are operated to move a rack 7 and rotate a shaft 9. The shaft rotates the device 2 through the one-way clutch 21 and gearing 24, 4, the device 1 being simultaneously rotated by its connection to the work. At the same time, the shaft 9 rotates segmental gearing 16 to withdraw the wedge 18 from the member 3 on the device 1 to permit the rotation thereof. The movement of the rod 6 is halted by a stop 11 engaging a gear 8. The member 3 and hence the work are held temporarily by a plunger 26 before the rod 6 is reversed to re-engage the wedge. The wedge completes the precise indexing of the work and locks it in place.
