Abstract

1,036,612. Washing bed-pans. DENT & HELLYER Ltd. May 21, 1963 [Feb. 22, 1962], No. 6911/62. Heading A4N. On closing the spring counterbalanced lid 9 of a bed-pan washing apparatus, link 23 turns crank arms 22 and 17 to tilt cradle 14 so that a bed-pan 13 carried therein is brought into a vertical position, in which it is sprayed with water and steam from nozzles 64 and 52, respectively. The cradle 14 is pivotally mounted on rod 16 by means of sleeve 25 and has a guide rod projecting laterally and engaging a slot in a member 27 fixed to the side of chamber 1. When the lid is closed, an electric motor 51 is switched on and a washing cycle takes place as cam shaft 47 rotates through one complete revolution. As a lid-securing catch 29 is locked by upward movement of rod 69 produced by cam 73, cam 67 rotates nozzle 64 from a laterally displaced position, clear of the falling contents of the bed-pan, to an upper operating position. Fluid supply valves 40, 41 and 53 are then operated sequentially by cams 48, 49 and 55, respectively, while cam 67 oscillates nozzle 64. At the end of the washing cycle, catch 29 may be released by pedal 34. Additional nozzles 58 are provided for washing urine bottles and water is supplied to the nozzles from pump 37.
