Abstract
Solid copolymers of ethylene sulfide and propylene sulfide which are substantially insoluble in benzene and have melting points of 110 DEG to 212 DEG C. are made by copolymerizing in an environment substantially free from elemental oxygen and unreacted water a mixture of the monomers in the presence of 0.05 to 3% by weight of the mixture of a catalyst which is the product of reaction in an inert solvent of diethyl zinc and water. The copolymers may contain from 0.1 to 99.9% by weight of either component. The reaction may be carried out at 20 DEG to 80 DEG C., without a solvent or in an inert solvent, for example a hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon. The molar ratio of diethyl zinc to water may be from 1:1 to 3:1.
