Abstract
1,036,182. Transistor amplifying circuits. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 5, 1964 [March 8, 1963], No. 9390/64. Heading H3T. [Also in Division G5] In an amplifier in which the output terminals are shunted by an additional circuit presenting a non-linear or variable impedance the additional circuit is connected to the output terminals via a series impedance and the junction of the series impedance and additional circuit is connected to a feedback path having a feedback factor such that the signal appearing across the output terminals is independent of the impedance of the additional circuit. In an em bodiment, e.g. a magnetic tape recorder, in which transistor 4 feeds recording head 6 via series resistor 5 and the recording level is monitored by means of rectifier-fed meter 8, distortion of the output due to the rectifier is prevented by connecting resistor R1 in series with it and taking negative feedback from the junction point to the base of the transistor over resistor 9. It is shown in the Specification that the necessary condition is for the feedback factor to equal the output impedance of the amplifier with open output circuit, divided by the impedance of resistor R1 and also the gain of the amplifier with open output circuit. The output impedance of the amplifier may be reduced by means of an additional feedback; e.g. a resistor is provided between collector and base of the transistor. In addition, any frequencydependence of the amplification of the amplifier may be compensated for by replacement of resistor R1 or 9 by a corresponding impedance network.
