Abstract

1,035,426. Lasers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. April 5, 1965, No. 14341/65. Heading H3B. To enable the output of a heliumneon laser 1 to be critically focused on a workpiece 14, the laser is first pumped by a continuous power source 11 so as to produce a visible output beam of insufficient power to affect the workpiece, and after focusing is carried out by relative adjustments of the laser, a focusing lens 13 and the workpiece, the laser is pumped by a pulse power source 12 of sufficient intensity to produce a high power infra-red output. The laser comprises a glass tube having windows 3, 4 at the Brewster angle, and is provided with electrodes 5, 6 and 7, 8 connected recpectively to a continuous R.F. power source 11 and a 25 kv. pulsed power source 12. Alternatively the R.F. source may be replaced by a D.C. source. The optical cavity is formed by a pair of confocal mirrors 9, 10 of which mirror 10 is partially transmitting, this mirror reflecting 98-99% of the incident light at the visible wavelength of 0À6328 Á and 90% at the infra-red wavelength of 1À153 Á. Focusing of the visible beam during the adjustment phase is observed through a protective filter 15. The visible light wavelength may be changed to 0À488 Á by including a trace of argon gas.
