Abstract

1,035,386. Change-speed control. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. June 22, 1965 [June 29, 1964], No. 26880/64. Heading F2D. In a rail vehicle transmission a gas turbine 10 is coupled to input and intermediate shafts 26, 34 by spur gearing 21 ... 25, shaft 34 being connected to an output shaft 96 driving the wheels 117 through bevel reversing gear 105 and spur reduction gear 114. 115. The arrangement provides three speeds: (1) Low-through gears 31, 32, one-way clutch 62, gears 61, 63; (2) Intermediate-by direct connection of shafts 26, 34 through a self-synchronous Leggetype clutch 35; (3) High-through gears 31, 32, a Legge clutch 65, gears 64, 70. Automatic upshift and downshift between intermediate and high gear ratios is controlled by a speed responsive valve 86 regulating the supply of liquid to an hydraulic coupling or slipping clutch 72, and also to actuators 94, 91 for the clutches 35, 65. With low ratio operative valve 86 operates at a predetermined speed to fill coupling 72 by a centrifugal pump 80, the slip first causing clutch 62 to over-run and then allowing actuator 94 to engage clutch 35 and establish direct drive through shafts 26, 34 during which coupling 72 is emptied. At the speed for engagement of high ratio valve 86 again operates to fill coupling 72, clutch 35 then disengaging and clutch 65 engaging to transmit drive through gears 64, 70. Downshift takes place in reverse manner. When the vehicle has been braked all the clutches are disengaged and the selection of lower gear can be made without operating coupling 72, and when intermediate or top gear hydraulic braking may be effected by locking the sleeve of clutch 35 and filling coupling 72.
