Abstract

1,035,148. Combustion chamber linings. BROWN, BOVERI & CO., Ltd. Nov. 26, 1964 [Nov. 28, 1963], No. 48151/64. Heading F4B. A lining element for a combustion chamber or duct is formed at least partly of gas-permeable material so that a coolant may be injected through it. The element comprises a porous inner wall 3 and an outer wall element 9 of shaped bricks, into apertures in which injection tubes 11 connected to an air supply via lines 13, 23, 25 slidably fit. The air blown through porous element 3 cools it from flame 35. Alternatively, Fig. 5 (not shown), the porous element may be backed by an hollow air shaft. Ceramic powder 21 from mixing tank 15 may be entrained with the injected air to form a protective coating on the face of element 3 after fusion in the flame 35. The porous element 3 may be formed from sintered balls, cubes, tubes or cylinders of nickel coated chromium, aluminium oxide, beryllium oxide, magnesium oxide, zirconium oxide, thorium oxide, and mixtures thereof, or from silicon carbide, boron carbide, boron nitride, molybdenum disilicide, titanium bromide or cerium sulphide. The powdered material injected may be ceramic or cermet powders, carbides, borides, nitrides, sulphides or metallic powders, such as chromium alloys or titanium, or a K 2 O, Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 mix. Mixtures of high and lowmelting point oxides, or high melting-point materials covered by a low-melting point flux such as spinell or a coating of LiF and ZrO 2 on an MgO core may also be used.
