Abstract

Unsaturated carboxylic acids, e.g. acrylic and methacrylic acids are prepared by oxidizing an a -olefine in the vapour phase at from 200 DEG to 500 DEG C. with molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst of empirical formula <FORM:1035147/C2/1> wherein v is from 1 to 16, w from 1 to 3, x from 6 to 24, y from 0.2 to 4 and z from 11 to 152. The catalyst may be in the form of a mixture of oxides or heteropolyacid salts and may be on a conventional support. Examples describe the treatment of propylene and isobutylene.ALSO:Catalysts for use in a process for the oxidation of a -olefines in the vapour phase at between 200 and 500 DEG C. to unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids have the empirical formula CovSnwMoxTeyOz where v is from 1 to 16, w from 1 to 3, x from 6 to 24, y from 0.2 to 4, and z from 11 to 152. The catalyst may be a mixture of oxides or of a heteropoly acid salt and a metal oxide and may be supported on silica, diatomaceous earth, alumina, silicon carbide, titanium oxide or zirconium oxide. Examples describe the preparation of acrylic and methacrylic acids by adding ammonium chloride followed by stannic chloride to a warm aqueous solution of ammonium pararmobybdate, filtering and working the product, then adding cobalt nitrate and tellurium nitrate to a boiling aqueous solution of the product which is finally pelleted and dried at 400 DEG C. Acrylic and methacrylic acids are prepared using the above catalyst and the tellurium and stannic components are varied in ratio.
