Abstract

1,034,839. Storing grain and silage. W.H.D. DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Dec. 8, 1964 [Dec. 11, 1963], No. 48872/63. Heading A2D. An apparatus for storing foodstuffs, such as hay silage or undried grain, requiring protection from oxygen in the air over a substantial period of time during which time it is withdrawn at intervals, comprises a rigid outer supporting structure 10 and an inner flexible air-impervious container 16. The structure 10 may comprise a cylindrical framework of metal tubes 11 carrying metal sheeting 13 and wire mesh 15 as shown, or may comprise a metal-band-reinforced timber shell, or may be constructed of concrete. When used for storing grain, the container 16 terminates at its base with a flexible discharge funnel 19 in accordance with Specificatin 1,034,840, and the top of the container 16 is fixed to a rigid cylindrical ring 18 raisable by means of cables 20 and pulleys 21, 22 and a winch 23. In use, as the container is progressively emptied of grain, the ring 18 is lowered so reducing the volume of the container 16 and preventing ingress of air. When used for storing silage, the container 16 is filled and emptied from the top, the top being sealed, for example, by twisting the upper edge of the container 16 and tying.
