Abstract
Compositions useful as hydraulic fluids, heat-transfer media and lubricants comprise a fluorine-containing silane of the formula ArxSi(OR)4- x where Ar is an aryl or substituted aryl group, each OR is an aliphatic-oxy group at least one of which contains fluorine and at least one of which contains 6 or more carbon atoms, and x is 1, 2 or 3. The preferred fluorine-containing groups are of the formula -OCH2(CF2)nCF2X where n is for example up to 9 and X is H or F. The compounds may be used singly, in admixture with each other or with additives, e.g. diphenyl, diphenyl ether and tetraphenyl orthosilicate.ALSO:The invention comprises fluorine-containing silanes of the formula ArxSi(OR)4- x where Ar is an aryl or substituted aryl group, each OR is an aliphatic-oxy group at least one of which contains fluorine and at least one of which contains 6 or more carbon atoms, and x is 1, 2 or 3. They are prepared by reacting a fluoro-alcohol with an aryl halosilane, preferably in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor. The preferred fluoro-containing groups are of the formula -OCH2(CF2)nCF2X where n is 1 or more and X is H or F. Suitable aryl groups are phenyl, naphthyl, fluoro-phenyl and fluoronaphthyl, and they may contain further substituents, e.g. chlorine, alkyl etc. The aliphaticoxy groups include cycloalkoxy and aralkoxy in addition to alkoxy. The compounds described are phenyltri-, diphenyldi- and triphenyl (1H,1H,7H-dodecafluoro-n-heptyloxy)silane, diphenyl di(1H,1H-pentadecafluoro-n-octyloxy)-silane, and phenyl tri- and diphenyl di-(1H,1H,9H-hexadecafluoro-n-nonyloxy)silane. Phenyl di(1H,1H,7H-dodecafluoro-n-heptyloxy) (n-octyloxy)silane is also mentioned. Uses.-Lubricant, heat-transfer medium, hydraulic fluid.
