Abstract

A film of a synthetic resin or regenerated cellulose which has on one surface been metallized in vacuo is coated on both the metallized and the unmetallized surfaces with a coating formed by polymerization in situ of a composition comprising a vinyl or vinylidene compound and a comonomer which is an insolubilising agent which under the polymerized coating insoluble in boiling water and boiling aqueous acid and alkaline solutions. The agent may be an isocyanate or an epoxy compound. The coated film is then heated to evaporate off the solvent and heated further to effect polymerization of the vinyl compound. The synthetic resin of which the film is composed may be a polyester such as a polyethylene terephthalate. Non-opaque pigments such as phthalocyanic blue or green or anthraquinone red may be added to the solution of the vinyl compound. The vinyl compound may be vinyl aceto-chloride or vinylidene chloride. Finally the metallized film with its polymer coatings is cut into narrow strips, e.g. 0.2 millimetre wide, which constitute the laminated threads of the invention.
